WELLSVILLE -- A toddler shifted a sport utility vehicle with a trailer out of park Sunday, sending the vehicle rolling downhill. As the child's grandfather attempted to stop the SUV, the trailer ran over him, and the man later died.
The victim of the 5 p.m. accident in Wellsville has been identified as 54-year-old Steven Speth, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.
Speth was working on his semi-tractor in his front yard when his wife and daughter were hooking a small utility trailer to a Dodge Durango.
A 2-year-old grandson was in the back seat of the Durango and climbed into the driver seat. The child was able to pull the shift lever out of park, and because the vehicle was on a hill, it started to roll.
Speth saw his wife and daughter trying to get into the Durango to stop it and ran over to try to stop the truck.
It is unknown at this time if Speth slipped or fell, but he was run over by the trailer. He died at Logan Regional Hospital around 8 p.m. Sunday.
The vehicle and trailer traveled about half a block before it crashed into a parked truck.
The child was not injured in the crash.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
