I am so glad that the Utah School Board of Education voted unanimously to recommend that handwriting and cursive be taught (April 7, "Utah school board wants to preserve cursive"). I feel that it should be included in the curriculum. It has so many uses and purposes in today's world.
Not to mention that if cursive is no longer taught a very important thing will be lost. All the adults today know and use cursive in their everyday lives. If cursive is no longer taught than those kids will not be able to read it and a valuable form of communication will be lost. Also historic documents are written in cursive so if cursive is no longer taught than how will they be able to read those records. A part of our history will be lost.
I do think it is great that they are setting core curriculum guidelines across the nation. Hopefully it will unify the nation with a higher set of standards regarding education. I also hope that when the board takes their final vote on the matter that they vote the same way they have in the past.
