ROY -- A four-game winning streak has the Royals playing with all kinds of confidence.
Roy High earned a 5-2 victory over the Box Elder Bees on Friday, finishing off a 3-0 week in Region 5 baseball action.
"Box Elder swings the ball extremely well, but Corey Quintana kept them off balance today," Roy coach Travis Flint said. "He made pitches when he had to and we played great defense today."
After giving up a run in the top of the third, Roy scored four in the bottom half of the inning on a 2-RBI single from Connor McGuire followed by a run-scoring single from Skyler Coombs.
"It seems like this team wakes up and does a good job of hitting when we have guys in scoring position," Flint said.
Roy added a run in the fifth, cruising along with the 5-1 lead.
Quintana, in just his second varsity start, ran into trouble in the seventh inning as the Bees scored a run and then loaded the bases with three straight hits. Garrett Bowman came in to relieve, and got a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to stop the Box Elder rally.
Grady Hansen had a double for Roy, now 3-1 in region play.
"These kids have responded so well to me, and to our staff," said Flint, in his first year at the helm at Roy. "Credit the kids for working hard and doing what they need to."
Jayk Brooks took the loss for the Bees. Connor Udy had a pair of singles as Box Elder outhit Roy 9-5 on the day.
In another Region 5 game, Mountain Crest edged Bonneville 7-4.
Scott Henderson picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs, while Kaden Lindley had a double.
Dakota Buckway suffered the loss for Bonneville. Bryson VonColln had the double for the Lakers.
In a Region 14 game, the Layton Christian Eagles claimed their first win of the the 2013 season with a 13-11 victory over Rowland Hall-St. Mark's.
Kyle Yockey picked up the win on the mound, while Jeremiah Johnson, Brock Rawlings, Keisuke Shimane, and Yockey each had doubles for LCA, which ended up with 16 hits.
In Region 11 action, Morgan edged Ogden 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the sixth. Cameron Jarrett picked up the win on the mound, while Kade Carrigan had a key double.
Brian Saunders suffered the loss on the mound for Ogden, which outhit Morgan 8-6, but committed three fielding errors.
* OGDEN 4, BEN LOMOND 1: At Ben Lomond High, the Tigers scored a pair late in a well-fought battle for the Old Firm Trophy.
Juan Robles scored in the first half on a Diego Diaz assist. In the 73rd minute, Dario Robles scored on an assist from Josue Valtierra for Ogden's 2-0 lead.
But the Scots answered with a Rodrigo Aviles goal to pull within one. With Ben Lomond pushing forward, Roque Ceja and Valtierra added late goals.
Alejandro Garcia keyed the Ogden defense.
* MORGAN 3, GRANTSVILLE 0: At Grantsville, Jakob Freestone scored twice and Cole Wilkinson added a score for the Trojans.
Payton Charlton earned the shutout for Morgan in goal.
In the other league game, Stansbury shutout Bear River 3-0.
* ST. JOSEPH 1, SUMMIT ACADEMY 0: At Bluffdale, the Jayhawks won a physical battle with Summit Academy.
Jordan Jones scored for St. Joseph in the first 10 minutes, but the home team kept pushing forward. The Jayhawks played a man down in late-going but Mitch Koehler preserved the shutout.
In another 2-A game, American Leadership whalloped Layton Christian 5-0.
* WOODS CROSS 3, CLEARFIELD 0: At Woods Cross, the Wildcats broke open a scoreless battle after halftime.
Daniel Perry, Dayton Elggren and Ethan Cope scored for Woods Cross. Taylor Kennard earned the shutout.
In another Region 6 game, Bountiful edged East 2-1.
MOUNTAIN CREST 1, BOX ELDER 0: At Hyrum, the Bees couldn't find the equalizer versus the Mustangs.
In the other league game, Logan shut out Bonneville 2-0.
* WEBER 1, DAVIS 0: At Kaysville, senior right-hander McKenna Bull tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and a walk.
Johnni Arbon, who walked, scored on a passed ball with two outs in the sixth inning for the defending state 5-A champion Warriors (3-4 overall, 1-1 league).
Darts senior right-hander Cheyenne Norton threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Kayla Pusey went 2-for-3 with a double and Breezy Roth was 2-for-3 for Davis (6-4, 1-1), which stranded six base runners.
* FREMONT 14, LAYTON 12: At Plain City's Dick Scadden Field, the Silver Wolves smacked three home runs in a seven-run seventh inning.
Freshman Jessie Wilson went 2-for-5 with a two-out, two-run walk-off shot. Madison Bosshardt was 3-for-4 with two runs; Rane Hadley went 3-for-4 with a double, a two-run bomb and three RBIs; Amber Nebeker was 3-for-4 with two home runs -- a three-run dinger and a two-run shot -- five RBIs and two runs; and Rilie Nicholas went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBIs and a run for Fremont (7-5, 2-0).
Cassidy Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs; Megan Benson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs; Mckell Moss was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run; Alanna Anderson went 3-for-4 with two runs; Rae Gall had a two-run homer; freshman Skylar Crockett was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; and Joy Christensen went 2-for-4 with a run for the Lancers (8-4, 1-1).
* SYRACUSE 17, NORTHRIDGE 4: At Northridge High, the Titans snapped their five-game skid with eight extra-base hits.
Brittany Vasquez was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, two RBIs and three runs. Cassidy Basinger and Courtney Starks also homered for Syracuse (3-9, 1-1).
Shaeleigh Knell went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Savannah Ward had a two-run bomb for the Knights (4-7, 0-2).
* CLEARFIELD 9, CYPRUS 4: At Magna, the Falcons smacked two home runs but also committed five errors.
Karley Williams went 2-for-5 with a double and scored a run; freshman Delaney Davis was 2-for-4 with a run; Lexi Andersen had an RBI single; Douglas drilled a two-run double -- she was also hit by a pitch -- with two runs; Kaycee Ray had a double with a run; Kassidy Young had a three-run bomb; Jayden Glade had a solo shot; and Lexy Horning went 2-for-4 with a run for Clearfield (5-6, 4-2).
* BEAR RIVER 11, TOOELE 4: At Garland, the five-time defending 3-A champion Bears scored at least a run in every inning.
Freshman Brenna Hinck went 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and three runs; Jordan Theurer was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and five RBIs; Bailee Trapp had a solo home run; freshman Kylie Larkin went 3-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases; and freshman Oakli Rhodes was 2-for-3 with a run for three-time defending league champion Bear River (10-2, 5-1).
The Buffaloes are 2-12, 2-2.
* GRANTSVILLE 12, OGDEN 5: At Grantsville, the Cowboys (8-4, 4-2) had a seven-run sixth inning.
