SALT LAKE CITY -- The state schools board is seeking public input on a plan to include cursive and handwriting lessons as part of Utah's education standards.

The Utah State Board of Education announced Thursday that it was accepting public comments on its website.

The board voted unanimously last week to recommend that handwriting and cursive be taught in schools, something that's not currently required or included in the curriculum guidelines called "Common Core Standards," which Utah has adopted.

The core curriculum guidelines, which 45 other states have moved to adopt, are a national effort to replace patchwork standards across the country with uniform benchmarks for students.

They include requirements for students to learn keyboarding skills by the end of elementary school.
