OGDEN -- All-American Amber Henry set a new Stewart Stadium record on Saturday in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:22.96 to highlight Weber State's two-day performance in college track and field. The time beat the previous stadium record by more than five seconds.
Henry headlined a great weekend for the Wildcats that included a total of 22 conference qualifiers between the men's and women's teams in the two meets the teams competed in. WSU competed in the Utah Spring Classic at the University of Utah on Friday and then the Wildcat Outdoor Classic at home on Saturday.
The men's team continues to improve, picking up ten conference qualifiers between the two meets.
"This late in the conference season, that is outstanding," men's coach Dan Walker said.
Dustin Durfee won the 400 meters with a time of 48.06, that time also qualifies him for the conference meet. Durfee was one of three Wildcats who qualified in the 400-meter dash. Isaac Akers and Josh Peterson also qualified for the Big Sky meet finishing with 48.55 and 48.56 times, respectively.
The 'Cats had the top two collegiate runners in the 1,500 meters. Mike Hardy was the top collegiate runner with a time of 3:52.12 while teammate Trevor Ricks finished just behind him with a time of 3:52.22. Both times are qualifying times.
Ethan Anderson won the men's discus throw with a mark of 159-3. That was his career-best throw and qualifies him for the conference meet as well. Teammate Dustin Martin has already qualified for the Big Sky meet, but set what would have been a qualifying mark with a throw of 156-8, finishing second in the event.
The men's team also had the top three finishers in the hammer throw. Derek Harrebomee won the event with a mark of 186-7.
The men's 400-meter relay team of Jonathan McUne, Cylor Morgan, Matt White and Chris Struckman won the event in 41.24. The team had already qualified for the conference meet, but Saturday's time is tied for the conference's best.
Friday, the Wildcats brought home three qualifiers. Morgan qualified in the 100 meters, Stetson Smith qualified in the 800 meters and JJ Morley qualified in the 400-meter hurdles.
Akers also recorded the top time in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles at Utah on Friday.
"I'm very pleased with our guys continuing to compete," Walker said. "We've continued to improve all season."
Moving closer to the conference meet, WSU five of the top 10 times in the Big Sky in the 400 meters.
The women's team picked up 12 new conference qualifiers over the weekend.
Regina Okoye set a new career-best in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.86, winning the event. The time was just behind a conference qualifier in the event. Okoye did qualify in the long jump at Utah on Friday, however.
Freshman Alice Keller qualified for the Big Sky meet with a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She ran a time of 11:31.12. Saturday was Keller's first time running the steeplechase.
Tiffany Hellstrom continued her dominant season in the javelin, winning with a mark of 158-04. Hellstrom has already qualified in the javelin throw, but the mark fell just short of her career-best of 160-2.
The Weber State women's 4x400-meter relay team of Katherine Wishmeyer, Elisa Isakson, Amanda Alston and Jerica Wilson won the event with a time 3:54.82, qualifying for the conference meet.
Katherine Wishmeyer qualified in the 400 meters with a time of 56.25.
"This was a great weekend," women's coach Jim Blaisdell said. "I thought we did really well at the University of Utah and this home meet is always fun. After getting 12 qualifiers, I feel a lot better about where we are now then we were a week ago."
Blaisdell has a very young team this season, but he is exciting about how they are performing.
"The freshmen stepped up," he said. "I am pleased with the effort. It's a good group this year. I enjoy their enthusiasm and their work ethic. Each week they are just getting a little bit better."
Other qualifiers for the women included Katy Hufford and Kami Shupe in the long jump, Ashley Kealamakia and Jamie Stokes in the 800 meters, Lauren Navidomskis in the high jump and Britlie Silvester in the hammer throw.
Both teams will be competing Long Beach Invitational Thursday through Saturday and at Utah State in the Mark Faldmo Invitational on Saturday.
