BOUNTIFUL - This community is getting a Starbucks.
City officials voted Tuesday to grant final site approval for Starbucks Coffee at 416 West and 500 South, after spending a significant amount of time discussing parking and traffic issues related to the location.
The new coffee shop would be located near the intersection of 500 South and 425 West in an area that is currently a parking lot and will feature a drive through. There are already two other commercial buildings in the area, but the new business is expected to result in only a net loss of approximately 10 parking stalls, according to Aric Jensen, director of planning and economic development.
City officials wrestled with existing traffic problems on 500 South and worried the new business will aggravate the problem.
Mayor Joe Johnson said traffic flow shouldn't be an obstacle to bringing in a new business. But he expressed frustration the Utah Department of Transportation hasn't addressed traffic flow on 500 South.
"It's a nightmare, it's a bad street. But I don't know why we would eliminate a guy coming into the city because of a traffic problem," Johnson said.
