SALT LAKE CITY -- Hundreds of people jammed the Salt Lake City Council chambers to voice their opinion about future transit routes for the new streetcars in suburban Sugar House.
The line currently runs from Central Point TRAX station east to Sugar House.
The question is whether the next phase of construction should run north along 1100 East or east along 2100 South.
Residents who oppose the northern route presented a petition to the council Tuesday night signed by nearly 1,600 people who live and work along 1100 East. They're worried about parking, traffic congestion and safety.
Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says he's talked to several business owners who support that route.
Students at Westminster College also spoke in support of the 1100 East route, which would run parallel to the campus.
