Jesse West headed to nationals

SALT LAKE CITY -- Top of Utah amateur heavyweight Jesse West, who trains at Foley's gym in Ogden, won the Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves championship Saturday night at the Sorenson Center.

West is one of six fighters from Utah who will represent the Rocky Mountain franchise in the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, set for May 13 to May 18, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City.

Other Utahns to advance include Alan Leyba (123 pounds), Francisco Lopez (132), Larry Gomez (152), and Danny Galloway (165).

They will be joined by Abram Martinez (141) and Andrew Scott (201) from Wyoming.

The recently crowned champions will have the opportunity to face off with 300 of the best boxers in the country in the nationals.

Bouts begin at 6 p.m. each night.

Also on Saturday at UFC 159 in Newark, N.J., Ogden mixed martial arts professional Steven Siler scored a close victory over Kurt Holobaugh.

The 145-pound Siler (22-10), controlled the first and third rounds over Holobaugh (9-2), of Denham Springs, La., to gain the 29-28 nod on all three cards.
