ROY — Police on Saturday diffused a large-scale confrontation between two rival motorcycle gangs during a funeral procession.

Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham said one of the gangs was having a funeral procession on 1900 West between 5600 South and 5800 South around 3 p.m. for a member who had died in a motorcycle accident last week. A rival gang showed up, sparking a confrontation.

The gangs involved were the Mongols and the Vagos.

Anticipating problems, police officers had stationed themselves in the area, and they were able to quickly break up several altercations before anyone was hurt, Whinham said.

He estimated more than 100 gang members were involved.
