Everyone has an opinion about what should be taught at public school. Should we teach creationism or evolution? Should we say the pledge of allegiance?
How do we teach sexuality? Who's perspective do we teach history? Is capitalism good or bad? How do we approach mathematics? Do we allow seminary or prayers in school? The way it is now, government officials make these decisions for our public schools. As parents, we do not get a choice about what our schools teach with our money.
The answer is school choice (vouchers). School choice would allow parents to decide what their kids will learn with their allocated funds for their kids.
This is a win for everyone. If you are a very right-winged Christian, you can choose a school that teaches your values. If you are not, you can pick a different school that represents your values. No matter what your view, you get to choose a school for your kids.
Competition will raise the bar for all schools. Imagine, if you are not happy with your kids school and you could pull their funds and put them in a different school. Do you think you would get a cold shoulder from administrators and teachers? Do you think administrators and teachers would try to keep parents happy? Do you think parents would be more involved with how their school is if they knew that they could change schools any time? All of these things would make the education system better for the students and parents.
No matter what your personal standards, school choice will allow you to get a custom education for your kids. The competitive market will raise the bar for all schools. When you read the comments to come, you will see that progressives don't think parents will make good education choices for their kids. Progressives want to make sure that most kids are taught what they think is best on controversial subjects. As a parent, ask yourself, "do I know more about what is best for my kids than a government official?"
