SAN ANTONIO -- Houston Baptist came from behind to thwart Southern Utah's hopes for an American Sky Conference golf championship Wednesday, overcoming a five-stroke deficit on the back nine at the par 72, 6,936-yard Dominion Country Club to take a three stroke win over the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds also finished second last year in their final Summit League championship.
SUU had a one-shot lead over the Huskies heading into the day's play and extended it to five shots as the teams made the turn, but HBU's Jeffery Merrell led a charge with four birdies on the back nine to bring the team in at 2-under par on the back and one-over par for the day at 289.
Meanwhile, after making the turn with all five players in the top-20, SUU struggled on the back nine (the more difficult track all week), coming in at 6-over par for that nine and 5-over for the day.
When the dust had settled Houston Baptist won the tournament at 7-over par 871 while SUU finished second at 10-over 874. Utah Valley was another stroke back in third place while Sacramento State finished fourth at 877.
Weber State was 10th in the 12-team tournament.
Jake Holt was SUU's low finisher, tied for fifth at 216 after a round of 1-under par 71 on Wednesday, three shots off the pace of medalist Jordan Weir of Sacramento State.
Northern Colorado finished fifth at 880, followed by Hartford (890), and Binghamton (900), while UT Pan American and Cal State Bakersfield were tied in eighth at 909. Weber State finished 10th at 913, followed by North Dakota (937) and Chicago State (1,037).
WSU's Jordan Herzog was ninth overall, shooting a final-round 75 to finish at 217.
Jeff Jones finished 39th at 231, followed by Michael Johnson (235), Matt Wahlen (236) and Colton Dallimore (237).
* USU SIXTH AT WAC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS: Utah State's Tanner Higham carded a 6-over 78 during his final round Wednesday to finish tied for 11th-place with a 9-over 225 (73-74-78) at the 2013 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference men's golf championship held here at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
New Mexico State won the team championship with a 23-over 887 (286-298-303), while UT Arlington finished second with a 29-over 893 (294-307-292) and San Jose State was third with a 36-over 900 (296-305-299). UTSA finished fourth with a 39-over 903 (293-311-299) and Idaho finished fifth with a 46-over 910 (294-313-303), followed by Utah State in sixth with its 51-over 915 (292-312-311).
UT Arlington's Paul McConnell won the individual championship with a 2-over 218 (71-78-69).
* UTES END UP 12TH AT PAC-12 TOURNEY: At Los Angeles, the Utah golf team wrapped up the the Pac-12 Conference Championship at the Los Angeles Country Club Wednesday. The Utes posted a final team score of 1513 (358-371-393-391) to finish 12th.
Sophomore Brandon Kida finished tied for 45th with a four-round total of 300. Junior Daniel Engle registered a 302 and junior Benjamin Bankhead logged a 304.
Freshman Jonathon Thomas and sophomore Gentry Hicks each carded a 77 in the final round to lead the Utes, each finishing with final scores of 306. Junior Casey Halliday came in at 309.
