LOGAN -- Talk about senior superlatives.
Bonneville High's Parker Jones and Jay Walter capped their Region 5 careers with impressive division championships on Thursday to pace the Lakers to the region title.
Pushed at every turn by defending league champion Logan, the Lakers swept the singles portion of the tournament with freshman Keith McMullin also claiming a region singles title.
Thanks to runner-up finished at first and second doubles as well, the Lakers finished the season with 53 points to outdistance Logan (47), Sky View (28), Mountain Crest (11), Box Elder (9) and Roy (6).
Jones and Walter, who Bonneville coach Katy Hall says are as good a tennis player to ever play at the the school, will now set their sights on the state 4-A tournament next weekend.
"This was our major goal. To win region," Hall said. "They're an awesome team."
At No. 1 singles, Jones repeated as champion with a sterling 7-5, 6-3 win over Sky View's Austin Jeppson. The two have battled at every dual and tournament this season, with Jones up for the challenge.
At No. 2 singles, Walter claimed the crown with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory over Logan's Jake Stevenson. At No. 3 singles, McMullin was even more efficient, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Logan's Matt Robinson. It is his fourth No. 2 singles title in league play.
At No. 1 doubles, Logan's Jordan Larsen and Hunter Ballam posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bonneville's Tyler Heaton and Bobby Crofts.
At No. 2 doubles, Logan's duo of Andrew Hopkins and James Larsen earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Bonneville's Tanner Heaton and Alex Hall.
A year ago, Jones -- who is still considering a couple of college offers -- made it to the quarterfinals of the elite division at state, while Walter reached the finals before losing. The Lakers, who were third overall in 2012, and Grizzlies, who finished fourth, will now prepare for top teams from Timpview, East, Bountiful and Woods Cross.
Sky View and Mountain Crest swept up most of the third and fourth-place spots, save for No. 2 doubles, where Box Elder's Andrew Johnson and Nathan Scott won a thrilling 7-6 (9), 6-4 decision over the Mountain Crest squad to earn third. Box Elder's Scott Frischknecht and Justin Law finished fourth at No. 1 doubles.
In other action, the Region 11 championships got under way at Ogden High School and Mount Ogden Park, on Thursday afternoon, with the finals set for today at 10 a.m.
Also, the state 5-A championships will get under way at 8:30 a.m. at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park. Region 1 teams and Viewmont will battle the top Salt Lake City teams for spots in Saturday's semis.
The 2-A championships also will be staged Saturday.
