MORGAN -- Wild weather swings affected the region track and field championship schedules Wednesday and Thursday, with most local meets pushing into today to complete their full schedule of events.
That didn't deter a few of the best of the best from showing off in their specialties.
Morgan's Kassie Nagel won the shot put in the opening round of action for the Region 5 championships, one of the events the Trojan field athlete has been dominant in this spring. Her other event, the discus, will be staged today at Morgan High School.
Other Top of Utah winners in the Region 11 girls championships were Ben Lomond's Sydney Bucher in the javelin, and Ogden's Cate Carabine in the 1,600 meters.
The Tigers also won the medley relay and hold a slight lead over Bear River and Morgan going into today's finals.
On the boys side, Ben Lomond's Ty Fejerang won the high jump, the only local winner of the three events contested.
Coaches and meet officials were able to get all the qualifying heats in on Thursday, setting up today's finale.
* BEES WIN GIRLS TITLE, BOBCATS TOP TIGHT BOYS CHASE: At Smithfield, Region 5 pushed through and got its region championships completed with a long Thursday of action.
Box Elder's girls won the team title, scoring 190 points to top Sky View (147) and Mountain Crest (146).
Winners include Box Elder's Stephanie Crapse, who won the javelin and shot put, and finished second to teammate Ashleigh Smith in the discus. The Bees' Hannah Malone won the 1,600, Lana Willard won the 100 meters, Jossie Ball claimed the 400 and Mitzi Munns won the high jump. Box Elder also won the medley relay.
On the boys side, Box Elder held an early lead, but Sky View came on to post 182.5 points. The Bees were second at 131.5, with Bonneville third at 121.5. Roy was fourth.
Box Elder's Riley Burt was a double winner, securing the 100 and 200 meters. The Bees' Michael Cruz won the 400 meters and the Bee also claimed the 1,600-meter relay.
Bonneville was led by Kail Chugg, who claimed victory in th 100-meter hurdles, while Brian Jasper won the 800 meters, and Braxton Stofferahn earned the javelin title. The Lakers also won the medley relay. Roy's Anthony Gregory won the high jump competition.
* WILDCATS OFF TO A FAST START: With a few events contested in the Region 6 meet at Woods Cross, the host Wildcats are in good shape.
Clearfield's Kirk Napolean won the high jump, while Bountiful's Joe Droge won the discus event.
* EAGLES SOAR TO BOYS, GIRLS WINS: At Salt Lake City, the Layton Christian Eagles ran to victory in the Region 17 meet held Tuesday at West High School.
The girls competition was a nail-biter, as LCA edged St. Joseph 146.5 to 142.5.
The Eagles wer led by Alissa Atisme, who raced to wins in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. Shed led and LCA sweep in those races, and also won the long jump. LCA's Mandy Carter won the 300-meter hurdles. The Eagles also won the 400-meter relay.
St. Joseph had a triple winner in Lyna Garcia, who won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races.
The Jayhawks' Tess Thurston won the high jump, Audra Thurson won the javelin, while teammate Ruby Marden claimed the shot put and discus competitions. The Jayhawks claimed the 1,600-meter and medley relays.
On the boys side, the Eagles dominated the point tally. LCA's Nick Edwards won the 100, 200 and 400 meters, while Colin Greenhill captured the shot put and discus. LCA's Jack Chandler won the javelin, Wilber Lacey won the high jump and Kyle Yockey captured the long jump. LCA also won the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.
St. Joseph was led by William Carrington in the 300-meter hurdles, Jackson Buttschardt in the 1,600 meters and Chris O'Brien, who won the 800 and 3,200 meters. The Jayhawks also capture the medley relay.
