OGDEN -- Orrin Porter Rockwell, personal bodyguard to LDS Church Presidents Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, will be a topic of conversation at this month's Ogden Pioneer Chapter Sons of the Utah Pioneers meeting.
The meeting is at noon Monday at Comfort Suites Inn, 21st Street and Interstate 15 (2250 S. 1200 West).
Bert N. Smith will speak on ancestor Lot Smith, a pioneer and friend of Rockwell, said Carlton Schultz, pioneer chapter spokesman in a news release.
Smith, 93, of Ogden, is cofounder of the Smith & Edwards store in Ogden.
While in the Marines during World War II, Smith met fellow Utahn Lawrence Edwards. The pair were in the Pacific on Guam and as the war ended, they observed the U.S. military dumping good war materials into the ocean to get rid of it.
The pair then established their business in 1947.
Smith is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a great supporter of the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo, the release states.Potential chapter members are welcome to attend with the cost of their lunch to be paid by the chapter. For other guests, there is a $12.50 charge.
