SALT LAKE CITY -- Police have arrested a 17-year-old accused of carrying a BB gun that kicked off a gun scare at his South Salt Lake high school.
Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley says the school principal mistook the weapon for a handgun and called police at about noon Friday.
She tussled with the student before he fled school grounds. Nearby schools went on lockdown for about 15 minutes before police stopped the student about a half a mile away.
Horsley says the principal at lunchtime smelled cigarette smoke near a group of students sitting on steps outside. She started unzipping their backpacks and the student asked her to check his pack elsewhere. She also found marijuana in his bag before he ran out.
No shots went off and no one reported injuries.
