SALT LAKE CITY -- The Viewmont Vikings got the job done, but it was a battle.
Viewmont won its first state 5-A tennis title in 1 years, knocking off perennial power Brighton on Saturday at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.
Viewmont tallied 22 points, with Brighton closing to 19 points. Alta (11) was third, with Davis fifth and Layton seventh overall.
Saturday's 5-A semifinals and finals were barn-burners at every division, including more than half of the matches going to a third set and tiebreaks all along the way.
Viewmont siblings Sam and Jacob Tullis won titles at No. 1 and 2 singles, offsetting a pair of impressive wins by the Bengals at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
Sam Tullis eliminated Weber's Colton McBride, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals, then edged Cottonwood's Zeke Richards, 7-6(2), 6-4 for the top singles title. Jacob Tullis topped Alta's Andy Ovard, 6-4, 6-1 for the No. 2 singles title.
Brighton's Casey Stoner eliminated Viewmont's Nick LeBaron in the semifinals, then went on to top Alta's Connor Pulsipher in the No. 3 singles final, 6-1, 6-2.
Viewmont's Ethan Hymas and Isaac Ford were pushed to the limit in the No. 1 doubles semis, beating Davis' Cooper Brown and Michael vonBallmoos, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. They then fell to Brighton's Anthony Panuzio and Mitchell Mansell, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-4 .
At No. 2 doubles, Brighton's Brandon Budge and Cheyenne Perry whipped Viewmont's Zach Beckstrand and Brandon Kasparian, 6-2, 6-2, in the championship.
At Liberty Park, Rowland Hall and Waterford tied for the championship crown, and split four of the individual division titles.
Layton Christian's Ricardo Gomez advanced to the No. 1 singles semifinals before falling to eventual champ Jay Anderson of Waterford, 6-0, 6-0.
The state 3-A tournament runs Friday and Saturday at Green Valley Tennis Club in St. George.
The state 4-A tournament runs Friday and Saturday at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.
