SYRACUSE -- An underground equipment problem Monday evening caused a power outage that affected as many as 2,000 customers.
Rocky Mountain Power spokeswoman Maria O'Mara said that when the outage began around 5:30 p.m., about 300 customers lost power. But as crews continued to try to solve the problem, at least 2,000 customers were affected. Around 8:15 p.m., the number of customers without power was around 550.
O'Mara said that in the course of trying to fix an outage, crews often have to knock out power to more customers than are originally affected. She speculated that was the cause of the bump in customers who lost power Monday. She added that underground problems are not common but are often difficult to fix.
O'Mara said there were also two smaller outages Monday, with 100 customers losing power in Fruit Heights and 80 customers affected in Roy, though those outages were unrelated to the larger one in Syracuse.
Power to the Syracuse customers was restored by 10:15 p.m., O'Mara said.
