I'm a long time supporter of President Obama, but in the face of three potential debilitating scandals, I recommend he immediately appoint three separate, independent special prosecutors to uncover the facts and truths concerning Benghazi, the IRS's investigation into the tax status of conservative groups like the Tea Party, and the Justice Department's seizure of Associated Press staff phone records. Then the president should step back, and as the children's song says, "let the consequent follow." History tells us he will be judged more for the actions he does or does not take now, not the scandals themselves.
We do know that today, everyone will judge him for his decision as to whom he selects to be the three special prosecutors. He can not select men or women from the usual good old boy/girl list. He must select Republican men or women of impeccable stature and utmost integrity. They can not be Democrats for the obvious reason that once the investigation is over and the results published, everyone, Republican, Democrat, independent, conservative, and liberal alike must agree that the all the facts and whole truth has been brought to light.
A few names the president might consider include: Mike Leavitt, former governor, head of the EPA, and Secretary of Health and Human Services; Sandra Day O'Conner, former Supreme Court justice; Olympia Snowe, former U.S. senator from Maine; Richard Lugar, former U.S. senator from Indiana; Bob Bennett, former U.S. senator from Utah; or General (RET) J.H. Benford Peay, III, former CENCOM Commander and current president of VMI.
I am sure there are others Republicans with the background and integrity to provide the country with a truthful accounting of the facts and the truth surrounding these very disturbing events.
Mr. President, we urge you, "To do what is right and let the consequence follow."
