SALT LAKE CITY -- Amateur heavyweight Jesse West, the Utah and Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves champion, dropped a decision to Texas fighter Kent Brinson in the quarterfinals of the national Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions on Thursday at the Salt Palace Convention Center.
He was the last Utah fighter in the tourney. Earlier, Utahs Isaac Aguilar (123 pounds) and Larry Gomez (152) dropped quarterfinal fights.
West moved into the third round of the nationals with a third-round KO over California's Jose Medrano.
West, who trains at Foley's gym in Ogden, staggered Medrano with a left jab before putting his opponent face first on the canvas with a flurry of punches, punctuated with a hard right hand.
The semifinals are set for tonight at 7 p.m., with finals set for Saturday at 7 p.m.
