SALT LAKE CITY -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch says staffers at the Internal Revenue Service, which recently apologized for unfairly targeting Tea Party groups, "are either deliberately incompetent or they are evil."
Hatch mentioned the IRS scandal while addressing thousands of fellow Republicans in Sandy on Saturday for the state party's annual organizing convention.
Hatch says the IRS scandal is more concerning than almost anything else he's seen in the 36 years he's been in the U.S. Senate.
Delegates at Saturday's daylong convention will choose from three candidates vying to replace the Utah Republican Party's outgoing Chairman Thomas Wright and consider proposals to adjust the party's process for nominating candidates.
Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love, who unsuccessfully challenged Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson last year, is expected to give a speech in the afternoon.
