Superintendent Smith is not an educator. He is able to see the big picture. Not one of the objections on the various cuts has mentioned the budget. How else are we to balance the budget?
Nationally, we are borrowing dangerously to live, without repaying the $ 17 trillion we own.
The librarian cut is wise and can make the students and parents responsible for reading habits. Teachers should teach students how to use the system and stop assuming students are incapable. Parents, take your children to the library each week, point them to good books, including the masterpieces. Guide them toward collage and good marks and let them dream. They are not stupid; don't treat them as incompetents.
Let the board of education and all in the system concentrate on better elementary schools with all their resources and get the job done for the students. Do not encourage students to champion a cause they don't pay for and can't understand. Don't lower standards, heighten them and challenge the students. Any foreign language student who is taught in his own language will be at a disadvantage in the marketplace for a job.
I have a 38-year-old disabled friend who has a high school special education diploma and she cannot read or write. I am finding it very east to teach her with very little time of my own, perhaps an hour every two or three weeks. Why didn't her school do this before now?
The adult education does not belong in the elementary system. When transferring the program from Ogden to Weber district, we are helping Ogden but not the taxpayer. We are still taxed for it.
Perhaps more concentration on elementary grades could have students graduating without requiring remedial training. Colleges, being very interested in tuition, should nevertheless issue a test and if a student doesn't pass, he is not considered ready for college. College should not be rehab.
Let's be truthful. Realistically these cuts are saving teachers from another cut.
However, we must cut teachers' salaries or benefits or retirement contributions. At present, our Legislation can't muster the courage.
