OGDEN -- A confusing Ogden street with two names will likely become more singular in the next few weeks.
The city engineering division and emergency services personnel want the council to adopt a resolution that would rename a small section of road just south of 30th Street and immediately east of Madison Avenue to only Patterson Street. The road is currently known as both Sullivan Road and Patterson Street.
Nine residential homes are within the small section of the dead-end road. On the north side of the road, four of the five homes have Patterson addresses, while the four homes on the south side have Sullivan addresses. The rename would formally change the address of five of the nine residences on the street from Sullivan Road to Patterson Street.
Tom Christopulos, Ogden's director of community and economic development, said the section of road was originally called Sullivan Road, but development in the 1990s connected it to Patterson and cut if off from the larger, more commonly known portion of Sullivan Road, which runs diagonally between Patterson Street and Van Buren Avenue. The city also vacated a portion of the road where it connected to Monroe, which created the dead end at the street's eastern edge. As a result, the 680-foot stretch of road has had two names for about 15 years.
The city says the change will make things easier for emergency responders, visitors and mail and delivery services.
Isamar Hernandez lives on the street and said she often gets her neighbors' mail and visitors to the area often have a hard time finding certain homes.
"It's funny, because my next-door neighbor has a Sullivan address and I have Patterson," she said. "Nobody really knows why, but it's probably a good thing that they are fixing it."
Dan Beazer also lives in the neighborhood and said people often come knocking on his front door, looking for one of his neighbors.
"I had a lady knock at my door just the other day, looking for somebody that doesn't live here," he said. "I had to tell her, 'Nope, you want that house over there.'"
The change is the latest in the city's effort to make street names and addresses more consistent.
After months of work, the council adopted an ordinance in January that changed the name of a street formerly known as South Oakcrest Drive, in the Forest Green Estates subdivision in Ogden, to Aspen Drive.
As South Oakcrest Drive, the street split at Fillmore Avenue and then shifted to the south before heading east, essentially making two different streets with the same name. Much like the Sullivan/Patterson issue, the street was confusing for those not familiar with it.
A public hearing on the latest street name change will be June 4, after which the council is expected to adopt the resolution.
