OREM -- Don't count the Lancers out.
Layton High's baseball team pushed its way into the state 5-A championship game with another heart-stopping victory on Thursday afternoon at Utah Valley's Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Lancers defeated Riverton 3-2 and will now take on Bingham for the championship.
The first game is set for 11 a.m. The Lancers need to defeat the Miners twice, so hope to play again at 5 p.m.
Coach Rob Ferneau and his squad have been on a hitting tear over the past couple of days. But after getting four hits in the top of the first inning Thursday only to come away with no runs, it took a little calming influence from the Layton staff to keep the Lancers focused.
"We just told them we were going to continue to swing; to do what we do," Ferneau said.
And they did it well.
Layton scored three runs in the fifth inning, thanks in part to a couple of Riverton errors and Logan Greenhalgh's RBI single.
The Lancers' defense was also equal to the task, overcoming a trio of errors with solid defensive gems by catcher Moises Perea as well as Franki Aguilar and Greenhalgh in the infield.
Jaden Trujillo tossed a three-hitter through six-plus innings to keep the Silverwolves off the scoreboard.
In the seventh inning, Riverton loaded the bases and plated two runs before Caleb Harrop got the final out via fly ball.
Quentin Marcellin, Perea and Harrop each had doubles for Layton (20-9 overall), which smacked 11 hits.
Jimi Dixon took the loss for Riverton, which had lost to Bingham 11-1 in the early game Thursday. Riverton's Cam Gust cracked a double.
Layton is gunning for its first state baseball title. In fact, a Region 1 team has never won a 5-A baseball championship.
Three seasons ago, the Lancers went 1-19.
Seven seniors, including five starters, were part of that squad. This season, the group -- Trujillo, Greenhalgh, Perea, Parker Kincade, Dexter Paez, Jeremy Thacker and Tyler Wall -- earned a share of the Region 1 championship and will play today for the state championship.
* SALEM HILLS, MAPLE MOUNTAIN MEET: At Brown Ballpark, the Region 8 rivals play at 1:30 p.m. for the 4-A title.
Salem Hills defeated Maple Mountain 7-2 early Thursday. Maple Mountain then topped Timpanogos 8-6 to earn another shot at its region rival. Maple Mountain needs two wins today for the title.
* BRAVES DELIVER TITLE: At Rio Tinto Stadium, the Bountiful defense was stout and the Braves got goals from Alex Simpson and Cesar Duenas to earn the 4-A championship.
* PIONEERS WIN VIA SHUTOUT: At Rio Tinto Stadium, Gui Leme and Chad Preisendorf scored second-half goals for Lehi, but it was the Pioneers defense that came up big against the Bingham Miners in state finals action.
