Thumbs up: On this Memorial Day, we offer our gratitude and thanks for the many soldiers who have served our nation and helped keep America free and safe. Those who have lost their lives, suffered injuries or been at peril deserve our eternal appreciation.
Thumbs down: To road rage. It's a dangerous practice and it can lead to unnecessary traffic deaths. Fortunately, a recent accident -- that a UHP official described as a result of road rage between two drivers -- did not kill anyone. However, three vehicles were damaged,
Thumbs up: To the Marines who accepted extenuating circumstances and held umbrellas over the heads of President Obama, and another head of state, during a rainy day in Washington D.C. Although male Marines are not allowed to carry or use umbrellas, they are required to do so if the president so requests.
Thumbs down: Conversely, to the sight of two Marines being rained on while the president and his guest were being protected from the rain storm. While Marines are used to being rained on while on sentry duty outside the White House, holding umbrellas so others stay dry looks odd.
Thumbs up: To the Ogden School District and its educators for reaching a new contract deal. The swiftness and relative amicability of the agreement is a welcome relief from previous, more rancorous contract settlements.
Thumbs down: To regulators, who weakened a rule on derivatives use by big banks designed to stem the chances of another Wall Street-caused recession. We regulate complex investment products. Major financial firms have already proven they will not act in the best interests of investors, or our markets.
