SALT LAKE CITY -- Police have arrested a 60-year-old father accused of stabbing his University of Utah son with a kitchen knife.

University of Utah Police found the 28-year-old son at his university housing around 4 p.m. Sunday with multiple stab wounds in his chest, back and legs, said Sgt. Mike Richards.

The student underwent surgery at the University hospital and was in critical but stable condition.

The student's 60-year-old father was arrested nearby the student's apartment and booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide and aggravated assault, Richards said.

The father was treated for minor wounds that police believe the he sustained by banging his head against a wall.

Richards told The Salt Lake Tribune that police don't know why the conflict occurred. He said both men are from Iran and the father only speaks Farsi.

Officers planned to bring in an interpreter to assist their investigation.

Police have not released the names of either man.
