PROVO — Federal prosecutors have decided not to bring criminal charges for a wildfire 11 months ago that advanced within feet of dozens of house in Utah County.
The Quail Fire burned 3.4 square miles of mountainside near Lambert Park in Alpine starting July 3.
The Daily Herald reports that the U.S. Forest Service has turned over an investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Salt Lake City.
Little is known about the investigation, but Melodie Rydlach, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, says it’s preparing a civil lawsuit to hold somebody accountable for the wildfire. Rydalch had no information about the cause of the fire or who might be the target of a lawsuit.
The Quail Fire was initially thought to have been sparked by a piece of excavating equipment. It’s not clear if investigators are still focused on that theory.
