KAYSVILLE -- A Salt Lake City police officer was seriously injured when his motorcycle hit debris Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 15.
At 2:20 p.m, a group of Salt Lake City motorcycle officers were on a training ride on I-15 near Mile Marker 328, traveling southbound near Kaysville, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release.
The group was traveling in the HOV lane. A large piece of metal debris, believed to be a piece of a refrigeration unit, was in the lane.
The lead motorcycles in the group began avoiding the debris, but the debris was hit by one of the motorcycles. The debris then hit a second motorcycle, causing it and its rider to go down to the pavement. A third motorcycle in the group then hit the debris.
The first and third motorcycles that hit the debris did not crash. The rider of the second motorcycle was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.The injured officer suffered serious injuries, said UHP Cpl.Todd Johnson.
The names of the officers involved were not released.
The accident backed up traffic for more than an hour while the scene was cleared.
