I am an AFGE (American Federation of Government Employees) member and a hardworking federal employee at Hill AFB. I work on a daily basis as an Environmental Specialist. I received my furlough notice on Monday, June 3, 2013, due to the infamous "sequester. I'm very concerned about the impact on my family, our troops, and small businesses in my community.
The president and Republicans agreed to the sequester in order to force them to work out a debt deal in 2012. The sequester was supposed to be such a bad idea that Congress would never let it happen and instead would work out a compromise. Congress remains gridlocked, and two years later, the sequester is in effect.
These sequester cuts are indiscriminate and will end up hurting the public. How does the government expect us to serve our troops properly when the Department of Defense furloughs its employees?
Not only does this furlough reduce my pay while my expenses remain the same, but my job is now at risk. I am worried about making my house payment and supporting my family, but if I am unable to pay my bills due to this new financial hardship, I could lose my security clearance and get fired. How does this keep our nation safe and secure?
I don't think our lawmakers ever gave a thought about how these furloughs will affect the local economy. Hill Air Force Base is one of the largest employers in northern Utah. I would really like someone from Congress to please tell me why they want to hurt small businesses?
I am very proud of the services I provide to the American people and I remain dedicated to serving the public despite these frustrations. However, enough is enough. Congress needs to do their job instead of stopping us from doing ours.
