Darrell J. Saunders of Ogden celebrated his 80th birthday at a family dinner held on June 1.
The 11th of 12 children, he was born in Ogden on June 1, 1933, to Edward T. and Marcia A. Saunders.
He married Mary Arlene Wilson on July 1, 1954, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple by LDS President David O. McKay. They were married for 56 years; she died in 2010.
He graduated from Ogden High School and Weber College, where he played basketball. He also graduated from the University of Nebraska Dental School in 1961 and practiced in Ogden for more than 50 years.
He was a softball pitcher. He was awarded the Homer “Pug” Warner Award from the LDS Church for his sportsmanship. He served as bishop, stake president, and is currently stake patriarch.
He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 and in the Naval Reserve from 1961 to 1973.
He and his wife served as guest service missionaries on Temple Square for 12 years.
He served on the Ogden City Council for 12 years.
His children and their spouses are Michael and Becky Saunders, Janna Atkinson, Brad and DeAnn Bingham, Mike and Kaelyn Campbell, Steven and Chris Saunders, Gary and Lisa Bate, Daren and Paula Saunders, and son George Francis of the Indian Placement Program. He has 47 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
