I never thought about how the fair was funded until I became involved in politics and started looking at budgets.
The 2013 Box Elder County Fair budget is $888,000, plus the almost $1.5 million spent on improvements. Divide this amount by our county's population, which is 50,290 and it is about $45 per person. Times $45 per person by a family of six and it is $270. So, even if you do not attend the county fair or have a child involved in the 4-H program, you are paying for it. Pardon the pun, but how "fair" is this?
Another example of unfairness is the Brigham swimming pool. It costs $320,000 to operate, but the revenue it brought in last year was $230,000. We needed $90,000 just to break even. If you don't swim, you still have to pay for the swimming pool.
Another example is the Brigham City golf course. It has been losing money for the last 25 years. It was reported that it made money for the first time last year and yet the golf course needed to come back to the city to ask for money to help with maintenance. If you don't golf, you still have to pay for the golf course.
If you were a private company and losing money like our government loses money, you would be out of business. Government stays in business because it can just increase our taxes, taking away more of our income and our freedom to choose how our money is spent.
"Men and (women) who are wise, good, and honest, who will uphold the Constitution of the United States in the tradition of the founding fathers, must be sought for diligently. This is our hope to restore government to it's rightful role"----Ezra Taft Benson.
"America, the greatest losses to our freedom have come not from someone attacking us, but from the government ignoring the Constitution and the majority letting them getting away with it"----Judge Andrew Napolitano.
Solution: Let us stop the government from getting away with it and restore our government back to its proper role.
