RIVERDALE -- Construction on "Applesauce Corner" will close a portion of Interstate 15 later this week.
A construction project to rehabilitate the deck structure of the Interstate 84 bridge as it passes over I-15 in Riverdale will begin Friday and will close both the northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway.
Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Vic Saunders said closures on the freeway will be implemented from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. June 14-15 and June 19.
During the closure, signs will alert I-15 motorists of relevant detour information.
Saunders said work on the project will include structural column work and a complete re-decking of the I-84 bridge structure.
Portions of the bridge deck have been badly deteriorating over the last several months.
Crews will also be conducting asphalt paving work on I-84 in both directions between the I-15 ramps and the Riverdale Road interchange.
To facilitate final paving, a single-lane closure of the inside lane on I-15 northbound has been put into effect nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. underneath the I-84 bridge. Motorists are advised to watch for changing traffic patterns while crews conduct paving work.
The work is expected to be complete by the end of June.
The section of I-84 is frequently used by freight trucks hauling cargo and is commonly known as "Applesauce Corner" because of many high-profile accidents on the road involving trucks carrying fruit.
