OGDEN -- A day after Father's Day, the sons were represented as the Ogden Raptors' roster was released featuring five players whose dads played in the big leagues.
Zach Babbitt, Dillon Moyer, J.D. Underwood, Jesmuel Valentin and Alex Santana are all hoping to follow their fathers' footsteps to the majors.
The 2013 Raptors began to arrive in Ogden on Sunday and held their first workout at Lindquist Field on Monday morning to prepare for Thursday's season opener at Grand Junction.
Their home opener will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lindquist Field against Idaho Falls.
Manager Damon Berryhill returns to Ogden for his fifth season as the Raptors' skipper with two new faces on his staff, both former major leaguers.
Pitching coach Scott Radinsky was a reliever for the White Sox, Dodgers, Cardinals and Indians from 1990-2001, pitching 481 2/3 innings with a record of 42-25 and an ERA of 3.44, and spent part of 2012 as the pitching coach of the Cleveland Indians. Hitting coach Leo Garcia played in 54 games for the Reds in 1987-88.
Valentin's father Jose was a 16-year big league veteran infielder for the Brewers, White Sox, Dodgers and Mets. He made brief appearances in the majors in 2002 and 2003 but his official rookie season was 1994, when he finished ninth in American League rookie of the year voting with Milwaukee.
"His first major league year was 1994, the year I was born, so most every year he played in the major leagues I was there in person and just had a lot of fun enjoying those times," Jesmuel Valentin said. "I think that was one of the good things that helped me as a baseball player, just watching, learning, having that experience in the dugout and watching those games. Being every day around all those great players, the All-Stars around him, was a really good experience."
Jesmuel Valentin, a native of Manati, Puerto Rico, was the 51st overall draft pick in the 2012 MLB draft, selected by the Dodgers in the first compensation round. He began the 2013 season at Class A Great Lakes in Midland, Mich., and hit .212 in 33 games.
"Everybody's saying we have a better team than last year so we're just working hard. We're just so pumped to get the season started and I think this is going to be a really good year," Valentin said. "I just got sent down to practice a couple (things) and I'm just here to try to help my team in everything I can, just hustle 100 percent, give more than 100 percent to make my team win," he said.
Now he's starting the season for the second time this year.
"I feel better right now because I started really hot in Midland and then it was just a little bit of a struggle," Valentin said. "It's better now that I know what bad things I did that made me struggle and (I'm) just working on those things, to start here and have a better season than I was having in Midland and get better in every single thing in the ballpark."
The Raptors have been to the Pioneer League championship series in each of the past three seasons but have never won a title.
Santana is one of four Raptors returning from last season's roster, along with Austin Cowen, Sawil Gonzalez, Jonathan Martinez and Jesus Valdez.
Berryhill said other than a basic introductory meeting, there isn't much time for get-to-know-you activities with Raptors teammates who are already here and those who will arrive over the next few days before the season.
"It's not really that tough of a job (to get everyone acclimated)," Berryhill said. "These guys have all come from the Arizona program (the Dodgers' extended spring training program) or from a college program where they're used to being around a group of guys. We get here and we get three days of workouts and we jump on the road. They're at the field enough to where these guys become somewhat of a family. They get to know each other real quick."
