John William Stevens and Gwen Costley Stevens of Plain City will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. The event will be commemorated at an open house on June 24 in Nauvoo, Ill., where they are currently serving an 18-month LDS mission.
They were married on June 24, 1953, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple.
He graduated from Utah State University as a mechanical engineer and worked for Hill Air Force Base for 32 years. He was a square dance caller for 20 years and enjoys building houses, wood working and being a substitute math teacher and LDS Seminary teacher.
She was a stay-at-home mom for many years and later worked as a rural mail carrier. She enjoys family activities, quilting and serving as a substitute LDS Seminary teacher.
Both have had many church callings throughout their lives. They served their first mission in Tonga, South Pacific; and their second with the Ogden area LDS Institute program.
They say their greatest joy in life is their faith and their family.
Their children and their spouses are Debra and David Kaminsky, Brigham City; Julie and Lee Bouwhuis, Jeffrey and Karen Stevens, Sheri and Clayton Anderson, and Shauna and Stanley Smith, all of Plain City.
They have 20 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
