If you've ever been to Farmington Pond, you know it's not the best looking pond. It can be covered in trash and things people leave behind. But one thing you would never expect to see is a teenage boy carelessly throwing a rock at a duck.
You might not think it's important, but that boy killed the duck. The rock that the kid threw hit him in the eye. The kid and his friends laughed and thought it was funny.
It was around 4:30 p.m on June 25, when the kid threw the rock. When my friend and I got up, they left in a hurry. Apparently one of them had to get his "hair done." We rushed to the duck to see if he was okay. As I got closer, I saw the duck was bleeding from the left eye and his nose. He was also unconscious.
I gently grabbed the duck, he was still alive, but just barely. I scooped him up in my arms and ran back to my house to take him to animal control.
The people at animal control told me that they would have to put him down because they have to rehabilitation programs for ducks. As much as it hurt, I knew it was for the best.
But to that kid and his three friends that thought it was funny: You may not have known you killed this poor animal, but the fact that you all laughed and ran away when you saw me coming is sick. You're probably thinking, "its just a duck, it doesn't matter." Yes, you're right, its a duck, but you took a life so carelessly, you didn't check to see if the animal was fine, you all laughed and ran away like cowards.
What if that was your pet? And you saw some stupid, immature boys kill him thinking it was funny? You wouldn't be so happy. You'd be hurt.
You took a life that day and laughed about it.
