BOUNTIFUL -- A father and son tried getting away with stolen merchandise, then attempted to fool police in order to escape punishment, officers say.

Roger Lopez, 58, and Ray Lopez, 27, were arrested by Bountiful police Tuesday evening after allegedly attempting to steal groceries and other items from Smith's Marketplace at 555 S. 200 West.

Police said that, after being questioned by police, the men used alternate names, calling themselves Joe and Jerry Lopez. Upon hearing their Miranda rights, the elder Lopez confessed their real names, police said.

A search through the suspects' car led police to heroin along with drug paraphernalia. Ray Lopez was found carrying syringes and brass knuckles, officers said.

Both father and son have prior theft convictions, advancing the charges to felonies in this case.
