ROY -- Police Chief Greg Whinham has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the result of an outside investigation, Mayor Joe Ritchie confirmed Tuesday.
Ritchie said the Roy City Council received complaints in multiple anonymous emails, believed to have been sent by the same person, leading to Whinham's being put on leave.
However, Ritchie wouldn't comment on the nature of the allegations included in the emails, citing a desire to not interfere with the investigation.
"I don't put a lot of stock in anonymous emails," Ritchie said. "I don't know whether this person has an ax to grind. When you're police chief, you can make enemies."
When reached by phone Tuesday evening, Whinham declined to comment on the investigation. City Manager Chris Davis did not return phone calls seeking comment.
Whinham, 55, has been Roy's police chief since 2001, being appointed after four years as a lieutenant. He has served nearly 29 years with the department. He graduated from Roy High School in 1976.
Ritchie said Whinham was placed on leave last week.
"I hope the investigation is quick," Ritchie said, "so the department can move on."
