RIVERDALE -- A 25-year-old woman has been charged after admitting to police that she physically abused her 1-year-old son, at one point telling him she wanted him to die.
According to a probable cause affidavit, witnesses saw Bernadette Marie Zamora hit her son in the head several times with her hand and a shoe. Witnesses also said she threw him onto a bed and smothered him with a pair of pants, telling the child, "I hope you (expletive) die."
Zamora admitted to police to hitting and smothering the child, the affidavit said. In the moment, she confessed, she wanted her child to die, but stopped abusing him because family members were telling her to stop.
According to the affidavit, Zamora's "actions caused a substantial risk of death."
Court records show Zamora was booked Monday into Weber County Jail on $10,000 bond. She has been charged in 2nd District Court in Ogden with a third-degree felony count of child abuse and child abuse involving physical injury, a class A misdemeanor.
