The Weber County Sheriff's Office is urging people to use extra caution when visiting near Pineview Reservoir, as a rash of vehicle burglaries is plaguing the area.
Sheriff's Lt. Doug Coleman said burglars hit the area hard each year as the weather warms and people and vehicles crowd the reservoir. The burglars who typically hit the area are opportunists, breaking into vehicles only when they're unlocked or when valuable items are in plain sight.
Additionally, police often have a difficult time finding the burglars, as the smash-and-grab style of their crimes often leave little workable evidence, Coleman said.
"It's much easier for you to keep your stuff than for us to find it," Coleman said.
If you must leave valuables in your vehicle, Coleman recommended putting them into the trunk, adding reports of a burglar successfully breaking into a trunk are extremely rare.
