SANDY -- A Sandy man has been arrested on three felony counts of rape of a child after police say he impregnated a 13-year-old girl he met on Facebook.
Victor Robinson, 24, also is accused of injecting the girl with heroin before having sex with her at least three times since May.
Robinson "friended" the girl on Facebook in November, police said, and the two met in person for the first time in May. They have had a consensual relationship since then, investigators said.
Police Lt. Troy Arnold told KUTV-TV that he does not believe the parents were aware of the relationship until they found out she was pregnant.
The Division of Child and Family Services contacted police about the case Thursday night. The girl and her parents were then interviewed by investigators.
Charges against Robinson were filed Friday, the same day his bail was set at $100,000. He is in the Salt Lake County Jail.
Police said the case serves as a reminder to parents to be more aware of their children's online interactions.
"We take this very serious," Arnold told KUTV. "It is concerning to us because of the amount of social media and a sad reminder for parents and youth to remember who they're friending and for parents who they're becoming friends with on Facebook."
Under state law, anyone under the age of 14 is considered a child unable to give consent to sex.
"We're not sure if she wanted the charges or not, but because she is only 13, the state of Utah does not allow her to make that decision," Arnold said.
According to police, the two met at a home in Sandy but not where either of them lived.
