ALTAMONT -- Fire officials in Duchesne County say lightning struck a series of storage tanks at an oil well in Altamont early Tuesday, triggering an explosion and fire with flames up to 50 feet tall.
Altamont Fire Chief Greg Miles says firefighters were called to the well a quarter mile from Main Street after a loud boom woke neighboring residents about 12:25 a.m.
When crews arrived, two of the tanks were engulfed in flames and third had been launched through the air and outside a containment berm.
Miles told the Deseret News (http://tinyurl.com/ln47pq6 ) it took them about two hours to get the fire under control partly because a nearby gas line had to be shut down before they could battle the blaze. No one was hurt and no evacuations were required.
