I am writing concerning my growing frustration with the complete lack of leadership in our country and lack of empathy for federal employees. As a federal employee, I have watched political games being played with a total lack of accountability by our "elected officials." Laws are written and legislation is passed, oftentimes exempting our representatives, only to maintain their lavish and privileged lifestyle.
I am being furloughed because of these games. It wasn't bad enough that cost of living raises were deferred while health care and other costs continue to rise, but now, because of the mistakes of our representatives, those mistakes are expected to be passed down to us, the little people who elected them. This is truly disgusting.
I once believed that my work as a federal employee was a way for me to give back to my country as I was unable due to physical limitations to enlist in our military. Now, I feel ashamed that a once great nation will turn its back on its own because of the political games. While we send necessary resources to countries like Egypt, true Americans go hungry. While our commander-in-chief takes the "first family" on lavish vacations, Americans are asked to sacrifice their homes, their way of life to foot the bill. Our founding fathers must be completely disappointed in what this nation has become, a nation of greed, political power and stepping on the backs of hard working Americans to gain political clout.
Abraham Lincoln once said, "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." These words, spoken well over a century ago, are becoming truer today than ever. The constant bickering, finger pointing and jabs of this government only creates more animosity and prevents anything from truly getting done. No one on either side, Republican or Democrat, has been willing to step forward and take a stand for the betterment of the American people. That, and only that, will be the "change" this government needs.
