SALT LAKE CITY -- The new director of the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs promised that preparing for base realignment talks involving Hill Air Force Base will be one of his top priorities.
The Senate voted in special session Tuesday to appoint Gary Harter as the new executive director of UDVMA. During a morning confirmation hearing, the former Army colonel told lawmakers he is concerned about getting two new veterans nursing homes in the Beehive State operational as well as getting ready for the next round of base closure talks for the Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
"I've already started looking at that (BRAC) and how we can position Hill to be very, very competitive," Harter said of the issue.
Veterans' nursing homes are scheduled to open in Ivins and Payson this year.
