Pope didn't mention gay priests in statement

Jul 30 2013 - 3:13pm

The Standard-Examiner headline about the pope and gay priests is simply not true (July 30, "Pope Francis says he won't judge gay priests"). The Standard is not totally responsible I guess, because they just blindly reported what AP and a lot of other news agencies reported. The actual quote from the pope is: "When I meet a gay person, I have to distinguish between their being gay and being part of a lobby. If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them? They shouldn't be marginalized. The tendency [to homosexuality] is not the problem...they're our brothers." He also reaffirmed the Catholic Catechism which says homosexuality is not the sin, the homosexual act is the sin. Nowhere did he say anything about gay priests.
