MIDWAY -- Sirene Blair is right where golf fans expected her to be after the first day of the Utah State Women's Amateur.
And so are Lea Garner, Kelsey Chugg and Tara Green after the first 18 holes of the 107th version of the UGA event wrapped up on Monday afternoon at the Wasatch Mountain Lake Course.
Blair and Rynae Baca shot 2-under-par 70s, with Garner the former Bonneville High standout now playing at BYU, all alone at 71.
Green, a former Weber High star now playing at Montana, is at 72 along with Chugg, the defending State Am champion.
Annette Gaiotti, at age 60 an older competitor, sits at 73, with college golfers Haley Dunn and Kristie Jensen at 74.
There are 50 competitors in the tournament.
Former champion Julie McMullin (2010) is at 77, with former champ Sue Nyhus (1985, 1999) at 78, and Melanie Christensen, the 1993 champion, at 82.
Chugg, as the defending champion, will join the top 31 golfers after today's second round in the the match play portion of the tourney.
There will be a Breakfast of Champions on Wednesday morning followed by the match play Round of 16. The quarterfinals will be held Wednesday afternoon.
The semifinals will be played Thursday morning and the championship match will be played Thursday afternoon.
Chugg won the title last year in Logan with a 3 and 2 win over then 13-year-old Naomi Soifua, who is once again the youngest player in the tourney at 14.
Soifua shot 78. There are 18 golfers at 77 or better after the opening round.
* UTAH FINISHES EIGHTH AT BOYS JUNIOR AMERICA'S CUP: At Kihei, Hawaii, Tropical Storm Flossie did not dampen the spirits for the 72 junior participants at the Wailea Golf Club.
After Flossie passed, the players saw bright blue skies on a beautifully manicured golf course creating perfect scoring conditions on the final day of the event..
Team San Diego retained the lead most of the day with Team Mexico (2) in close pursuit. At the end of the day Team San Diego wins the 2013 Junior America's Cup with a final score of 627 (-21). Team Mexico (2) finished 2nd four strokes back at 631 (-17) followed by a three-way tie for 3rd
Utah was eighth overall at 651.
Austin Banz and Mitchell Schow led the way with 16th-place finishes for Team Utah.
Banz shot 71-72-72 for a 1-under 215. Schow shot 75-71-69 for 215 as well. Kelton Hirsch shot 74-77-71--222, while Rhett Rasmussen shot 75-73-75--223.
At Albuquerque, N.M., Jessica Sloot led Utah to a 14th-place finish in the Girls Junior America's Cup in Albuquerque, with three straight rounds in the 70s.
She shot 78-78-75-231 to lead the Utah team. Madi Rooker shot 78-81-78-237 and Katie Perkins shot 84-84-75-243.
