CLEARFIELD -- The 9th annual Davis County Walks event will be held at 7:30 a.m., Saturday, at the Legacy Events Center in west Farmington. The activity to promote wellness consists of a 5K Walk/Run, officials said.
In addition, the county will host its annual Mud Fun Run at 9 a.m. that same day for children. There is no charge for the mud run, but children are required to register.
Research shows the benefits to walking result in a 30 to 40 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease and a 50 percent reduction in the risk for premature death, Davis County Health Director Lewis R. Garrett said.
Walking is a great physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk for chronic disease including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, said Sally Kershisnik, director of county health department's Family Health and Senior Services Division.
Participants are encouraged to pre-register for the event by Aug. 9 in order to save $5 off their registration fee, said Jessica Hardcastle, 5K event organizer.
The pre-registration cost for the event is $20, while it is $25 for those who register after Aug. 9, Hardcastle said.
Each participant will receive a T-shirt, as well as refreshments at the finish line, she said.
Top finishers in each category will receive cash prizes, Hardcastle said. Drawings for other prizes will also be held for those participating in the event.
Registration forms for the 5K Walk/Run or mud run are available at the county health offices, 22 South State Street, Clearfield, or online at www.daviscountyutah.gov/dcw. For information call 801-525-5050.
