FARMINGTON -- American Legion Post 27 in Farmington will host an American Flag Retirement ceremony at the Davis County Fair. The event will take place in the outdoor arena at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

American flags that are no longer serviceable will be retired by burning in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code. Participants in the ceremony will include the American Legion, Utah National Guard, Boy and Girl Scouts and members of the Davis County fire departments.

"Hundreds of flags contributed from all over the state will be burned with respect and dignity on a pyre that will create an unforgettable visual spectacle," said Post 27 Commander Kent Hansen. "We hope this will be the first of what will become an important annual event."

The keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. Brian L. Tarbet, Utah National Guard (Ret.), formerly the Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard.

The public is welcome, and admission is free.
