Paul and Barbara DeGroot of Washington Terrace will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Friends and family may attend an open house in their honor from 2 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the 3rd LDS Ward church house, 4900 S. 300 West, Washington Terrace.
They met on a blind date in 1960, introduced by a mutual friend. After he served in the Central Atlantic States LDS Mission, they were married on Aug. 29, 1963, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Logan Temple.
He was born in Ogden to Daniel C. and Gene Buswell DeGroot. He graduated from Weber High School in 1960.
He worked for the city of Ogden in 1963 in the finance department and as a firefighter, retiring after 35 years of service in 1998. Later he joined Barbara working with Wasatch Transportation as a school bus driver.
She was born in Ogden to Thomas W. and Mary E. Foster Stephens. She graduated from Davis High School in 1961.
She worked for the Federal Employees Credit Union for 15 years before becoming a bus driver/route coordinator for Wasatch Transportation. She worked with special needs children in this capacity for more than 30 years.
They are serving an LDS service mission, working locally with the church's addiction program.
They are the parents of Margene and Rick Lewis, Annjenette and Darin Cloud, Michael and DiAnna DeGroot, and Matthew and Molly DeGroot.
They enjoy spending time with their eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
