North Ogden City Councilman Wade Bigler needs to apologize for false allegations he made to fellow Councilman Brent Taylor in emails that involved political disputes.
Bigler, who is running against Taylor in the race for North Ogden mayor, questioned Taylor's military record in 2010, arguing that Taylor was only a private in the second Iraq war, and not a leader of men.
Bigler wrote: "You continually talked about making quick and wise decisions so 'your men' would get through Iraq alive, as though you led them into battle. You were a private the entire time you were in Iraq. You weren't this big leader that you make yourself out to be in order to make yourself look good. Public record." The emails were obtained by the Standard-Examiner through a Government Records Access and Management Act request.
However, Taylor's military discharge record from Iraq shows his rank as first lieutenant and shows that he received decorations, including a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Taylor served both in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We understand that politics can get rough, but this is a matter that requires honesty and integrity to be restored. Bigler's false accusations are an insult to Taylor, who spent a considerable amount of his lifetime in harm's protecting Americans from our enemies. A public apology is in order.
