ROY -- The excitement building around the Roy Royals this year has been a boost to the community and the school. However, that excitement comes with a little apprehension in regards to head coach Fred Fernandes.
Fernandes, one of the best coaches in the state offensively, is excited about getting the chance to play against other competition. He remains somewhat skeptical about his team's chances to be good.
"There are some players that have an extreme amount of dedication to the weight room and to the team and it has shown itself the past six weeks throughout camp and drills," Fernandes said. "When you have great examples of hard from guys like Tyler Skidmore and Justin Weaver, you hope it rubs off on the team. There are some things that need to be taken care and we need to get some people healthy if we want to win games."
Fernandes is a former Roy High Royal and was one of the best athletes in the history of the school.
That makes his coaching there special and coming off the school's first winning record since 1991 shows that the coaching staff is dedicated to winning games and finding a way back into the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
"We are trying to get the players to understand that being in the weight room is going to help them get stronger and be ready for the physical aspect of the game in a good region," Fernandes said.
The younger classes at the school have had some recent success in their games from previous years and that winning is something that Royal Nation is hoping will put them over the top and into the playoffs this season.
