LAYTON -- Those who want to sample a spiritual gathering don't have into go to a church to do that.
A new nondenominational congregation here isn't meeting in a church.
The Salt Christian Church is a new church just starting up with meetings at the Davis Conference Center, 1651 N. 700 West, in Layton.
The new church is a part of Roy Christian Church.
"The Salt Lake area is rapidly expanding," said member Austin Wheeler. "There is a new mission field that wasn't there before."
Wheeler said there were a lot of people in the Salt Lake area that were "unchurched."
The new congregation is an effort to reach out to those who have not been worshipping in churches, as well as a wide variety of other people in the area.
Sunday will be the church's first of two preview services that will be held at 10 a.m. Another preview service is planned for Sept. 8.
The services will be short introductions of what the church will be all about.
Two grand-opening services are planned for Sept. 15, at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Following those meetings, the congregation is planning to regularly meet at 10:30 a.m.
Wheeler said the new church doesn't affiliate with any organized religion.
"We're just Bible-believing Christians," he said.
Lead Pastor Brent Captain said the congregation offers a full band, as well as full children's and youth programming.
A youth group will start up at the same time the church officially opens and will meet one night a week.
"We will be launching into a series, talking about being 'un-stuck,'" Captain said.
He said issues such as worry, forgiveness, fear and anger sometimes create feelings of being stuck for people.
Captain said he will be sharing what God has to say in the Bible about these issues.
So far, he said, people of many different backgrounds have been attracted to the new church.
"We've seen people from all ages, from all different walks of life come and want to be a part of who we are," Captain said. "We've been connecting with quite a wide variety of people. I think that is really what a healthy family looks like. People are not of just one age group. That is what a community is too -- people of all different walks of life."
Captain's sermons will center on how practical, relevant and useful the Bible is in one's daily life.
